Leaving your mark
I learned, a few days ago, that Hunter S. Thompson had died. I, just like you, didn’t know who Thompson was (He was a Novelist/Columnist). However, thanks to news aggregators, I received an article about his death. Guessing that he must be someone ,for an article to be written about him, I load it and read up.
I guess it’s never too late,so, I am glad that I got to know this man, if a few hours posthumously.
A movie that I greatly enjoy, to say the least, is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. That movie is out of this world. Seriously, I was impressed by the writers’ ability to fantasize. Turns out, the writer didn’t have to fantasize. The movie was fully based on a story that Thompson wrote while covering a a motorcycle race. The guy led a wild life, constantly doped up and writing amazing pieces. I laughed my ass off when I caught a 5 second tribute of him on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart today. It’s like I was watching (Johnny Depp’s) Raoul in the movie.
I know you won’t get this, but the movie is very impressive, and to have it turn out to be a true story is even more so.
Thompson was the pioneer of “Gonzo Journalism”,subjective reporting, where the journalist leaves the sidelines and becomes an active participant in the news!
Here’s Thompson’s last article. I just got ahold of it. For those who’ve seen the movie, try to imagine the piece being narrated to you a-la Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas… you’ll catch my drift.
For the rest, read it for a small insight into the crazy life of a creative genius.
