Politics??? Me??? seriously…
Another day just like any other….Not quite. My last day in Athens. It’s been a blast. All sorts of great things happening. I really feel as if I have been in Lebanon for the past 10 or so days. Not quite, but close enough. Anyway, I’m leaving with a whole bunch of new contacts, friends, and experiences. And, I am leaving with much more on my mind. It seems like the questions that I’ve been dreading for a while, concerning my life and career, have finally been asked, and I’ve gotta come up with an answer… lot’s of thinking to do back “home”.
A heartache. I saw, for the first time, a touristic ad for Lebanon on CNN, very uplifting. Home is really the best place ever. Then, just to spite me, I’m sure, I read (on the news ticker) something about Hezballah, DAMN THEM, firing at Israel. I dream of the day someone wipes those bastards off the face of the earth. Why now? Why today? Is it just me, or do these people really hate Lebanon so much to include it in an already escalating controversy, what with the assasination of Yassin and all.
And about that assasination. Personally, and in general, I condone both Israelis and Palestinians. One could sympathize with the latters fully, but for a few facts. First of all, I think that, if they really care about their people, they would try to make the best of a crappy situation, and not go and make it worse on the innocent children born in Palestine. Secondly, the fact that, at one point, they wanted my country as an alternative to theirs makes them as much of my enemies as the Israelis. And finally, the suicide bombings, killing kids in night clubs and busses, blowing themselves up in shopping areas…that’s pure terrorism. And the fact that they do it, not in the name of their country, but rather, in the name of Islam makes them evil criminals, nationless, and as worthy of pity as the Israelis. On the other hand, the terrorism of the Israeli state is well known. I need no explanation for not sympathising with them.
This brings me to Yasin. The old bastard, crippled or not, was a vile terrorist. Anyone who believes in massacring innocents for any cause whatsoever is. Now, if someone had picked a fight with him, slapped him around, kicked him in the balls, whatever, I would pity the old fart because he would have been defenseless. But, to me, the assasination was a political act in a state of war. I never, ever believe that Israel is justified in anything that it does, but the fact is, the state exists, and Yasin’s gang was going around blowing up kids and families. Regardeless of whether he was crippled, blind, deaf, dumb or just plain stupid, his assasination was a tactical strike.
The sooner the arabs stop passing around martyrdom like a kidergarten star-of-good-conduct, and start seeing things the way they are, the sooner people, myself included, would start considering sympathizing with their case. I would have applauded if they blamed Israel for extending the cycle of violence, violating human rights and not giving peace any chance. Fullstop. But, by going on TV and blaming Israel for taking out a defenseless poor old man, they lose any support for their case, and look idiotic doing it.
Now, I know I don’t really mean this, but maybe there is a silver lining. If this escalates, and they take out each other’s political leaders, what remains would be people who want peace, freedom and coexistence. I mean, this whole thing is getting boring. Honestly, I don’t care if they reach an agreement, kill each other or fight it out David and Goliath style.
I know at least two people who will puff after reading this post. Guys, if you lived in Lebanon, if you see the damage these people did to the spirit of everyone I know, you will understand why I hate both of them so much. Home was the greatest place on earth and they fucked it up…helped by others, of course…..
Anyway, since it’s my destiny to live in Europe and be stereotyped as the thing I hate most in the world, I need to express my feelings and views, at least in typing.
ps: If they do end up fighting it out to the end, and the scales are tipping in the favor of Israel, I know of several hundreds of thousands of men-in-arms that most Lebanese would be more than happy to get rid of.
Anyway, like I said. Politics?? Me?? Ahhh, peace…Leave me in Sunny Athens, with the sea, beautiful girls and cars honking all around…at least for ten or so more hours…..
I hear it’s snowing in Hamburg…what a surprise.
