Roadkill
Roadkill
First time is lucky…. second time is arrogant…third dead.
On my way up and down to my university in Byblos-god I miss my car- I once hit a chicken. A chicken crossing the road, I always thought that was a nonsensical cliche. Apparently it is not. I braked and skidded to a stop, but the chicken was saved. The second tiem I saw it from afar (but I could swear it was the same chicken!) and I managed to slow down enough to let it pass… The third time was not so lucky… I was distracted by the chick next to me, and the chicken payed the price for its arrogance….
A lifetime later, or so it seems…. Today!
I have been having trouble getting to my morning classes, actually to all my classes. No matter when I go to sleep, I am always waking up late for any class, morning, noon or afternoon. I devised a solution-not the best possible, mind you, but one I enjoyed, in a sadistic sort of way- I would not sleep… So I have went sleepless from sunday afternoon to wednesday. Then I slept wednesday afternoon and most of thursday (missing thursday’s class)… I overnighted on thursday because I had a meeting on friday, today.
I showered in the early light (dawn breaks at exactly 7:16 am. I have watched for it!), dressed, and was out by around 8:30. The weather was agreeable for a change. No clouds, temperature hovering around 0 celcius for a change, no rain…not bad weather at all for Hamburg.Looking around, an elderly guy was walking his dog, a few cars moving, and a few people leaving their homes. I smiled (a rare thing these days) and, whistling happily at a refreshing day, started crossing the road.
It was then I realized something was wrong. One foot slipped from under me, the second followed just as soon as the first was back on solid ground, a few more of these cartoonish slides and I was buttdown in the middle of the road. A car swerved just enough not to hit me, but kept moving just the same, the man kept walking his dog, the people left to do whatever they were doing, and the sky was still blue! Damn! I almost died, and no one seemed to notice or care! That poor chicken!
